MPM continues to dismiss community concerns, reducing them to talk of “plants and fences.” But our objections have never been about landscaping — they are about the heart of the Milwaukee Public Museum: the Streets of Old Milwaukee, the European Village, WPA murals, dioramas, and the environments that carry our collective memory.

These are not trivial details. They are the very things generations of Milwaukeeans have cherished, and they cannot be replaced once dismantled.

For years, PreserveMKE and community members have raised these issues with the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors, asking them to step in and exercise their oversight. We have submitted letters, testimony, and public records requests — most recently a series of formal letters urging Supervisors to intervene on the public’s behalf and require transparency from MPM.  Read more about these efforts here → LINK

Our concerns are justified. MPM’s newly released Disposition Plan explicitly positions the museum as the owner of exhibit “components” — a word that allows them to sell, donate, or dispose of the very items we are asking about. By redefining treasured public assets as disposable components, MPM claims control over what belongs to the people of Milwaukee County.

The public has every right to demand accountability. These environments are not nostalgia; they are our shared history. And their future should not be decided behind closed doors.  Come to the Meeting September 2nd:

Dismissing the Public’s Voice: Our Concerns Go Beyond “Plants and Fences”

Financial Committment

In March 2022, The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors voted in a special session to grant $45,000,000 in taxypayers funds to Historic Haymarket, LLC to build a new Nature and Culture Museum of Wisconsin with the caveat that MPM, Inc reach a fundraising threshold.

In return for this $45,000,000 grant, Milwaukee County will receive no ownership stake in the new building.  LINK

"WHEREAS, upon execution of the Agreements, ownership and control of the 43 new Museum building will belong to MPM, and will relieve the County of many burdens 44 of capital maintenance and repair, at a cost-savings to taxpayers, while placing the 45 Collections in the hands of a trusted steward"

How did this happen?  How did MPM sell the Milwaukee County Board that it would be cheaper to give away the money to build a building for a private entity?

And, why does the State of Wisconsin get an ownership stake for their $40,000,000?  Learn More

This was noticed on Friday. It’s Tuesday. That’s four days, not including the weekend. That’s a rushed process for something of this magnitude.”

Supervisor Ryan Clancy

We are being asked to make a generational decision without a public hearing or real opportunity for the community to weigh in. Why now? What’s the urgency?

Supervisor Sylvia Ortiz-Velez

I only just received the term sheet. I still have outstanding questions about the exhibits, about the building. I don’t feel comfortable voting yes when this is moving so fast.

Supervisor Patti Logsdon
