Two years ago, a small group of concerned citizens united over the uncertain future of the Milwaukee Public Museum (MPM). Today, we are over 10,000 strong on social media—and we’ve made a difference. Our efforts have prompted citizens and elected officials to reconsider decisions that threaten to dismantle this cultural treasure.
But the fight isn’t over. We need your help. Writing to your elected officials is a proven way to influence public policy. Below are key points to guide your letter:
1. Preserve MPM’s Iconic Exhibits: Beloved exhibits like The Streets of Old Milwaukee, The European Village, The Buffalo Hunt, and The Native Pow Wow must remain intact and accessible to the public.
2. Clarify the Museum’s Fate: Many believe the museum is simply relocating, but most current exhibits are not included in the plan for the new museum.
3. Question Building Conditions: MPM leadership claims the current building is beyond repair. However, maintenance and repair reports we’ve obtained contradict this narrative. We call for an independent inspection of the building, with results shared publicly.
4. Protect Public Assets: The building, exhibits, and collections—created by skilled artisans and renowned artists—are public property and hold global historical significance. Losing these treasures would be an irreversible tragedy.
5. Demand Accountability: MPM Inc., the private organization managing the museum, seeks $85 million in public funding to build and privately own the new “Wisconsin Natural Museum,” yet excludes public oversight. Taxpayer investment must come with transparency and equity.
6. True Preservation Matters: While MPM Inc. promises to “preserve artifacts,” this vague language masks their intent to discard many cherished exhibits. True preservation honors not just individual artifacts but the exhibits that tell our shared story.
Additionally, share your personal connection to MPM—your memories can make your letter more impactful.
